TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH – New Tecumseth’s election ballot is filling up, and there’s still seven months to file for one of 10 seats at the town council table.
Last week, three candidates filed their nominations.
Rick Milne, the current deputy mayor, is re-seeking his seat. Milne is a veteran at the council table, serving as mayor in the 1990s before taking on the role of deputy mayor. Milne is running against Alliston lawyer Kevin Kemp for the deputy mayor seat.
Beeton Coun. Richard Norcross wants another term on council as well.
Norcross owns the Muddy Water Tavern in Beeton and also runs the Hornet’s Nest restaurant and concession at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex.
He has served three terms on New Tecumseth council, running without competition in the 2006 election.
For the rural area, former councilor Helga Elie is looking to serve on council again. The former Ward 3 councillor has filed her papers for Ward 5, which covers the rural areas north of the 6th Line.
Elie is a farm owner and operator who was a rural councillor for two terms. In the 2006 election she ran for mayor, losing out to current Mayor Mike MacEachern.
Elie is involved with the Royal Canadian Legion Beeton branch, the Alliston and District Humane Society and the New Tecumseth Streams Committee. She is also a longtime director with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture.
Other declared candidates for the Oct. 25 municipal election are: Mike MacEachern for mayor. Bob Marrs, Ward 1 (northwest Alliston), and Gordon McInnes, Ward 2 (southwest Alliston). Christine Brayford is seeking the central Alliston spot for Ward 3. Tom Carter has filed his nomination papers for Ward 7, the rural area south of the 6th Line, and Jess Prothero is seeking the one Tottenham seat.
A full list of candidates is available online at www.town.newtecumseth.on.ca.
