News release from Council of Canadians

Toronto  — Bill 32 – the Waste Disposal Site 41 in the Township of Tiny Act, 2008 – WILL be voted on in the Ontario Legislature THIS Thursday. The Council of Canadians is supporting this private members bill, which has garnered over 54,000 emails to MPPs calling on them to vote for Bill 32.
In an open letter sent to Ontario MPPs, Council of Canadians chair Maude Barlow said, “This act will protect forever the Alliston aquifer and the purest groundwater ever tested, which lies beneath the proposed dumpsite at Site 41.”
The letter from Barlow expressed concerns that the Ministry of the Environment, “approved Site 41 based on little more than their confidence in the ‘professionalism’ of a private engineering firm recently purchased by one of the world’s largest landfill corporations.”
“This abrogation of responsibility by the MOE left the community with few options this spring when construction of the dump began,” said Barlow. “The mass demonstrations spurred the County of Simcoe to vote against building the dump but without this Act, the purest groundwater ever tested is still at the mercy of the Certificate of Approval issued by the MOE.”
Bill 32 would revoke the Certificate of Approval. The Council of Canadians is concerned that if the Certificate of Approval is not revoked, Site 41 could still be built if the County were to sell the land or again decide to proceed with the landfill.
“MPPs must stand up and protect the water by voting for Bill 32,” said Barlow in the letter.
