Simcoe County councillors are looking for a totally new approach to waste disposal issues, following the decision to cancel the proposed Site 41 landfill site last month.
“I want to involve everyone here,” said Adjala-Tosorontio deputy mayor Doug Little, who introduced the motion to end work on the site, pointing towards the council chambers gallery filled with Site 41 protesters. “I want to see a specialized committee to deal with future issues involving waste.
“We tried it one way and it certainly didn’t work. I’m sure that we can’t do it alone.”
Earlier in the day, county councillors voted 26-3 to end a one year moratorium on work on the site, necessary to make the cancellation permanent.
Only Bradford West Gwillimbury mayor Doug White and deputy mayor Dennis Roughley, and Severn mayor Phil Sled, voted to continue work on the project.
It brought an end to 30 years of work to find a new landfill in North Simcoe, a process that cost $15 million.
Essa mayor Dave Guergis said he hoped that a new direction from the county would better engage the public.
“The public didn’t feel part of the previous effort. Its important to engage them in the future,” he said.
County council launched a Waste Management Master Plan process in August.
The issue will be reviewed by the corporate services committee in October. The province is also expected to release new waste diversion guidelines next month.
